12. Positive Behaviour Guidance Policy

Children are gently encouraged to become self-directed, confident and disciplined individuals. They are encouraged to be co-operative, work together and socialize in a warm atmosphere that is inclusive and respectful. If a child has a disagreement with another, this is an opportunity for the teacher to work with the child so that they understand their feelings, learn empathy and learn problem-solving skills.

Naturally, undesirable behaviours occur as each child grows and develops.  Whenever possible, positive sociable attitudes are reinforced and honoured.  Altogether, the classroom community establishes and maintains basic rules and a code of conduct. The children are involved in discussions about these and therefore feel empowered to deal with each other in a clear and respectful manner.  Clear and reasonable limits are set and maintained to ensure the safety and well-being of each child, the protection of their rights and the rights of others.  Children are shown how to be respectful of the materials within the classroom, their personal belongings, and the belongings of others.

Children are redirected if they need more time to learn a new skill of co-operation and calm voices are used. Sometimes play or activities are narrated as well so children begin to understand what is happening.

Educators will communicate with the child’s primary caregivers to provide any information which pertains to behaviour throughout the day. Educators and families work collaboratively to set the child up for success.
